programming languages that I still can't read:
  1. LISP (and scheme)
  2. C++ Templates

which suggests I need to take some time to really grok macros.

Well. "Reading Scheme" and "reading Scheme macros" are different animals.

If you flip through that copy of The Little Schemer that's on the shelf over at the Beffinary, I bet you'll be reading Scheme with no trouble within a week. Seriously, it's trivial. You've got variables, lambdas, and procedure application. That's it, plus a few special forms. Trivial.

Reading macros, on the other hand...I've only recently even started to try.
